Onyx is the best among stones. Traditionally used in jewelry, carving and architectural decoration, its stunning appearance and rich, vibrant colors and unusual translucent flecks make it an extremely popular building material. Rare than fine marble and highly sought after for its unique appearance, onyx remains a popular choice for homeowners looking to add a truly special touch to their home - let's see your home the envy of others.
The unique properties and rarity of Onyx make it a great choice for homeowners who not only want to incorporate natural stone into their home, but also create a signature that most others simply won't have due to the cost and exclusivity of the stone Sexual customization. However, it is important to understand the limitations of stone, which will help you determine how best to integrate it into your space.
Onyx is very fragile and almost always requires a research backing (usually fiberglass mesh) to be used as a countertop or tile. It's also very soft, scratches and splinters easily, and wears off frequently, making it a poor choice for high-traffic kitchen countertops or flooring materials. It is also susceptible to acid and erosion as well as water damage, so its use as a bathroom vanity is also not recommended. Finally, it must be maintained regularly with special cleaners and sealants, as ordinary household cleaners can damage the surface.
That being said, onyx is a great choice for accent pieces that won't be handled frequently or subject to heavy wear and tear. Many homeowners use onyx for the tops of banquet tables, islands, side tables, or coffee tables, all of which can be backlit to enhance and accentuate the translucency of the stone. Onyx can also be used for fireplace surrounds, wall tiles and panels, and can be carved for lamp holders, bowls, vases and other decorative objects.
